Rising Star Avery Lynch on Growth, New Music, and Finding Her Voice

Beginning her musical journey at age seven, Avery Lynch has come a long way as a musician.  Known for her heartfelt lyrics, Avery recently released yet another beautifully emotional song, “Rain,” and it is truly captivating. In this song, Avery gets personal, as she shares a story about when her and her boyfriend were broken up and she was asked on a date by someone else. She feels conflicted, because no matter who the other person is, they will never be her boyfriend. She doesn’t want to have that first date with a new person, and wishes she could take a rain check. As you listen, you can feel the emotion in her voice with every word. Along with releasing the new single, Avery recently signed a label deal with RECORDS, further boosting her career.

I had the privilege of interviewing Avery and getting an inside look of her songwriting process, her inspirations, and what it’s like being a young artist.

How does songwriting work as an emotional outlet for you?

I use songwriting SO much as an emotional outlet. I’m an extremely non-confrontational person, so I end up letting a lot of things go unsaid. My songs give me an opportunity to say what's on my mind and get everything off my chest, and hopefully/maybe the people I write these songs about will even listen. It’s also very healing to get to write about specific topics and make them sound like breakup songs even if they’re not! Relationships are so parallel that I could write an entire song about professional relationships—or even an entire industry—and it could still be perceived as a breakup song…(which is what the whole Friction project was, hehe).

As someone who started making music at a very young age, what is one of the biggest developments you've seen in your music, and what is something you would like to continue working on?

I think my songwriting and instrumentation have grown so much over the last year or so, which is really exciting. I’m trying new things and I’m having so much fun with it!

What is your favorite topic to write about?

My favorite topic to write about is definitely the endings of relationships or relationship problems. And not specifically romantic relationships, there are so many different kinds of relationships I can explore in my lyrics. I’m just so fascinated by the way in which people interact with and treat each other. There’s so much complexity around it—I love it.

How do you stay engaged with your fans? What do you think has contributed to the loyal fanbase you’ve cultivated?

About a year ago I turned my Instagram close friends into a space for me to connect more with my fans and it’s been so rewarding. I’m not great at posting on Instagram—it makes me anxious and I’m always nervous about how I’m perceived, and posting for people I know and other artists makes me stressed. So I now post on my close friends primarily for fans and we've developed such a great little community. I answer everyone's DMs and we have so many little inside jokes. I love my fans so much!

Can you tell us more about the meaning of “Rain”? Is there a message you hope listeners take from this song?

"Rain" is essentially about wanting to take a “rain check” but in a literal sense. I didn’t want to go on a date so badly that I wished I could’ve made it rain so I didn’t have to go. It’s that sort of hopelessness and desperation that I felt in that situation and I know so many others have experienced that. It’s essentially the sister song to “To Love Someone Else” which was also written about the same situation. I hope my song can be there for people who are feeling a similar way.

How did writing “Rain” help you in the situation you were in at the time of writing it?

"Rain" was actually written years after the experience I was writing about, so it didn’t really help me at all when I needed it most, haha. It was really rewarding to go revisit that situation and memory though.

How does working with the close-knit team that you have help bring your music to life? How does the music evolve from your demos to the final product?

I usually write most, if not all, of the song on my own before bringing it to my collaborators, who are almost always the same two people: jordanlilvee and Neisha Grace. Once the song is fully written, I'll record a demo either on my own or with Jordan. From there, we decide if we want to finish the production ourselves or bring in an outside producer to add their touch, and then we'll mix it.

What is something that keeps you going as a musician and inspires you to keep making music?

Definitely the fans! There aren’t a ton of them but, wow, do they make it all worth it. I have people who have told me that my music saved their lives and when you hear that as an artist, it just kinda changes everything. I don’t think I could ever stop making music, even if I tried, but I definitely won’t ever try because of them.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Probably Sara Bareilles because it would be the biggest dream come true and I think in that moment I would die of happiness, haha.

You’ve created songs inspired by your followers' comments and thoughts. Which songs have been inspired by this, and were they based on any specific stories from them?

Only a few of my old songs were written this way. “Love Me Nicely” might be the only song that I’ve released that was actually written based on a follower's comment. My other songs that I released during that time, I would have already written the song and then dug through my comments to find prompts that matched up. That’s what I did for "All I Need," "Out of Love With You," and "To Love Someone Else."

What was it like touring with Blü Eyes last Fall? Is there a specific atmosphere you hope to create for fans at your shows?

I loved touring with Blü Eyes! I feel like I learned so much. I want the atmosphere at my shows to be like we’re all just girls in our bedrooms singing these songs but we get to all be together. Just wholesome, fun, and sweet. My fans are the kindest people I know, and I want the atmosphere for them to be safe, silly, and fun.

Are there any specific genres or artists that have influenced your sound?

Some artists that inspire me and that I listen to too much to not have influenced my sound are: Sara Bareilles, Sleeping At Last, Holly Humberstone, The Beatles, and Lennon Stella.

Following your recent label deal with RECORDS, what’s next for your music career? Is there anything you’re working on that fans can look forward to?

I have so much new music planned for next year! I'm also hoping to head out on tour again soon!
