Blusher: Australia’s Newest Pop Trio
Blusher is an electro-pop trio from Australia, made up of three amazingly talented women: Jade, Lauren, and Miranda. With 281,800 monthly listeners on Spotify and their hit song “Accelerator” surpassing 2.5 million streams, Blusher is quickly picking up traction in the music industry. They’re all from different parts of Australia—Melbourne, Brisbane, and even a tiny town in the Outback—yet their distinct musical journeys have converged to create something truly special.
Blusher’s Musical Background
Miranda’s musical journey began at the age of five when she wanted to play the ukulele. However, struggling to push down the strings, she pivoted to the violin, where she received classical training. Eventually, she rebelled against her formal education, teaching herself guitar and exploring the worlds of pop and dance music. Lauren also started with classical training, but on the piano. However, she found inspiration in the pop hits of 2005, which led her to experiment with music production. Jade, on the other hand, grew up in a musical family—her parents were members of an ABBA tribute band called Babba (who still performs today). In her childhood she was able to perform with them. She also said she used to make her father play piano for hours while she invented “gibberish songs.” Allegedly, there are tapes of this that the rest of the band are dying to see.
Coming Together as Blusher
Despite their varied musical backgrounds, Blusher was able to eventually come together through connections in the Australian music scene. Jade and Lauren first crossed paths in the vibrant Australian music scene and started writing music together. Jade says that Lauren “kind of Simon Cowell-ed us and put us together in the band.” The three were originally solo artists, but after a couple sessions of writing together they clicked.
“My vision of the future was that I had just gotten to a place with my musicianship where I just wanted to write with women, and I just wanted to make a pop album.”
The Creative Process
Blusher’s songwriting process is very diverse. “We each have such a load of inspiration and a lot of different ways that we individually like to start writing,” they explain. “It can be very eclectic, and it’s kind of different every time, which keeps it fresh.”
Collaboration plays a huge role in Blusher’s creative process. “We’ll just start in the room, and it’ll be three people singing over top of each other until someone says, ‘That’s a thing that I like.’” Blusher also frequently writes on the road. “We’ve done a lot of writing trips to LA and to London and it's cool to branch out and gather inspiration and then bring it back to the three of us.”
Exploring Individuality Through Music
Blusher’s discography includes songs labeled with individual names, showcasing their different production techniques and ideas. “When we released our first EP… we’re all producers and just kind of wanted to play with the songs a bit more and decided to remix some of them. It’s been a cool way to express our individual creativity and production style, and we’re excited to keep doing that.”
Blusher has a very outgoing approach to their music: “We have this saying—when we have a bad idea, or a good idea, we say: ‘No one is doing it.’ And then we do it!”
While Blusher presents as a “girl band” on the surface, complete with synchronized dance moves and harmonized vocals, they emphasize that they are also producers and full-fledged contributors to their music. “Maybe we’re a new version of a girl band,” they say. “It’s cool to lean into.”
Racer, The Most Recent Single
Blusher’s latest single, Racer, radiates confidence and extroversion. “We’re really leaning into sports and the running track aesthetic for this new era,” they share. “It was inspired by a lot of energy and confidence and helping each other through tough times.”
They describe the concept of being a ‘racer’ as a state of being their fastest, boldest, and most confident selves. “This new single Racer is one that we want people to turn to when they need a pick-me-up or an edgy boost—or maybe they need some convincing to go out.”
Advice for Aspiring Musicians
For those looking to break into the music industry, Blusher has some advice:
“Just do everything yourself… There’s so much technology available now. Whether it’s making visualizers, producing music, or recording yourself, you can learn it all on YouTube. It’s fun to have that control over your vision—no one can tell you to stop.”
“Try not to compare yourself too much to other artists. Your best is going to look different from someone else’s best. What you do best is totally your own thing that no one else can replicate—stay true to that.”
“If you make opportunities for other people, you make opportunities for yourself. Don’t wait for someone to come along and make it happen for you. Find people you love collaborating with, commit to your power, and make it happen.”
Blusher’s music is available on all streaming platforms, and there’s a good chance they’ll be playing more shows soon.
