Genre-bending singer-songwriter Dora Jar released her debut album No Way To Relax When You Are On Fire on September 13, 2024. Known for her experimental sound, unique instrumentals, and introspective lyrics blended with imaginative storytelling, her debut album takes listeners on an exciting journey and marks an exciting point for Dora’s career. After touring with acts such as Billie Eilish and The 1975, Dora Jar recently shared her debut album across North America on her “Behind the Curtain” headlining tour.
In a recent press conference with Dora Jar hosted by °1824, we learned more about the meaning behind her album, how she fosters fan to artist connections through her music, and more.
With a packed tour schedule, Dora Jar joined us from the driver’s seat of her car, seamlessly answering our questions as she drove to her next destination. “Sometimes I feel like I’m on fire and full of action and I just keep going,” said Dora — Describing what her album’s name means to her. “Sometimes that feels really good and sometimes it’s very crazy,” she described, embodying this feeling and her free spirit as she continued driving.
This good chaotic energy is radiated in her albums’ sound and across her fanbase. Dora hopes for anyone who listens to “ feel courageous and open and dancey, and like the strange parts of them are the best parts.”
Beyond the listening experience, Dora has developed a strong connection with her fans through live performances. “I love being able to have shows this size where I feel like I can see everyone’s face and [watch] people feel every song,” said Dora. “I really like looking out in the crowd during “Debbie Darling”, I feel like people are really giving so much of their heart back.”
With lyrics representing vulnerable and raw emotions from her personal experience, she is able to foster a strong connection with her fanbase. She likes to write direct stories with outlined images, while also allowing for more abstract stories that anyone can relate to and connect with. “There's infinite ways to feel one emotion, I think that might be partly why I don't write too many literal lyrics,” said Dora. “I like leaving room for people to make their own connections.”
Her “Behind The Curtain” tour has also given Dora the opportunity to continue growing as a performer. “Its so fun playing live, we’re seven shows in and the shows change so much the more we get to do it,” said Dora. “It's all about just being in the moment and letting the audience sort of feed us to new exciting places.”
When asked about advice for when you feel like there’s No Way To Relax When You Are On Fire, Dora gave us some insight based on hard times she went through in her early 20’s. “Fire can sometimes feel like anger, and I think underneath anger is some kind of universal sadness,” said Dora. “So i think the advice is let the feeling, the hurt, just go through its natural course and lead you through whatever grief or sadness. Let it show you something beautiful and be patient for that.”
