“We Are Love” Tour: Sixpence None the Richer

Sixpence None the Richer is an alternative rock band formed in 1992 in New Braunfels, Texas. Members touring this year include singer Leigh Nash, guitarist Matt Slocum, bassist Justin Cary, drummer Dale Baker, and producer Steve Hindalong. Opening for the show is Double Wish, an Orange County-based duo.

The band released an EP titled Rosemary Hill this past October with six new songs. This EP perfectly captures the timeless sound of the late 90s and early 2000s Sixpence is known for, while still keeping it new and modern. Tracks from this album join some of their most popular and a handful of covers on the setlist.

The new songs from Rosemary Hill seamlessly blended with the older tracks. The upbeat energy of “We Are Love” and the calm of “Julia” felt just as comfortable on stage as “There She Goes” and “Kiss Me”. The definite fan favorite of the show was one of their most popular songs, “Kiss Me”. “Kiss Me” was released in 1997 and gained popularity from being in soundtracks from movies like “She’s All That” and “How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days”. Classic covers in their setlist also include “There She Goes” by The La’s and "Don't Dream It’s Over" by Crowded House.

The Constellation Room is a small standing general admission venue with a capacity of 250, supporting a homey and intimate atmosphere. Leigh interacted with the crowd multiple times, telling jokes or stories about her songs or time in the band. Over the years, Leigh’s voice has only grown stronger, amazingly performing songs both old and new. The different songs showcased Matt Slocum’s skill on guitar from rhythm to complicated riffs and solos. Dale Baker’s exciting energy matched the crowd’s light mood and showed a vital part of the band. Justin Cary’s bass linked together the drums and guitar with a more rhythmic melody. Steve Hindalong joined them on stage playing multiple different instruments from the drums, to rhythm guitar, to bells. Additionally, his cheerful mood brought out the band’s true chemistry. The longevity of their band as well as the performance they put on show their true love for their craft.

Joining them on tour is Double Wish, a duo consisting of Philippe Andre and Adam Sabolick. The two are Orange County-based with members of their family in the audience, creating a more intimate and personal atmosphere in the crowd. The complete acoustic performance gave a new light to their emo-pop sound, exemplifying their instrumental skill and highlighting the harmonies of their voices. In between songs, they let their personalities shine by talking to the audience or introducing their songs. Concluding the show, the two gave out complimentary CDs, giving new listeners a chance to hear their original sound.

The “We Are Love” tour proved Sixpence None the Richer’s place in fans' hearts, putting on a nostalgic and refreshing show. Their performance of songs from throughout the years created a timeless performance that brought together generations.
