The Model Tour - Wallows with support from Benee in Columbia, MD

On Thursday, August 22nd, alternative rock band Wallows performed at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. Wallows is a three-piece band from Los Angeles that originally formed in 2011, but did not release music until 2017 with their first single, “Pleaser.” The band consists of Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston. Since their first release, they have gained popularity with other hit songs such as “Are You Bored Yet?” and “Scrawny.”

Opening up for this run is artist Benee, who is originally from Auckland, New Zealand. Her international recognition came after her single, “Supalonely” became popular on social media platforms, specifically TikTok. Benee has been playing music since 2017 and is set to release new music coming this Fall. One moment during her set that stood out was an improvised action where she screamed into the mic. She followed by saying “Let’s have a therapy session,” and asked everybody to cry. Benee’s performance was full of energy and intrigue leaving fans curious and wanting to learn more about the up and coming artist.

Wallows took the stage around 8:45 pm and opened their set with “Do Not Wait,” which was played behind a see through curtain casting silhouette shadows of the band, adding anticipation and fascination for fans who patiently waited for the reveal. The band’s unveiling happened at the end of the song when they seamlessly continued into the first song off the new album, “Your Apartment.” The backdrop on stage showed a scene that can be recognized from Wallows’ promo photos for the tour. Throughout the night, it changed multiple times, creating a cool visual transition as the screens dropped between songs. It transitioned from the promo background, to the MODEL album artwork, a gradient sunset, and finally a light up background mimicking the look of a star-filled sky.

Halfway through the set, Dylan performed “She’s an Actress” as he made his way through the pit audience and up to a secondary stage set up at the back of the amphitheater. Braeden and Cole joined him at B-stage concluding the end of the song, where they had set up the small area with chairs and lamps creating a cozy space where they continued to play what felt like a very intimate living room performance. After playing three songs at B-stage, Braeden sang a fan favorite, “Worlds Apart,” as he walked back to the main stage.

During a small break between songs, Dylan made introductions of each person on stage while the crowd clapped and cheered. Fans definitely screamed the most for the drummer, Cole, as there was a distinct volume level difference compared to everyone else. Wallows finished their show with a two song encore including “Are You Bored Yet?” and “Only Ecstasy” all while big light up letters of the band’s name were displayed behind them.
